The Pain Companion
The Pain Companion: Everyday Wisdom for Living With and Moving Beyond Chronic Pain by Sarah Anne Shockley
When in perpetual physical, mental, or emotional pain, how does one come back to the present moment and access peace?
I have friends and students who suffer from chronic pain and they have asked me similar questions over the years that have totally stumped me.
I blazed through The Pain Companion: Everyday Wisdom for Living With and Moving Beyond Chronic Pain by Sarah Anne Shockley intrigued to learn more about pain management in relation to mindfulness.
As someone fascinated by the human spirit, resiliency, and identical twin studies in particular: with identical DNA raised in the same environment—is it nature, nurture, or consequential choices that influence the shape our lives take?
How can people served similar suffering have such vastly different perceptions, attitudes, and life experiences stemming from the same pain?
How do some people make lemonade out of hell?
At what point do we lose our autonomy? At what point do people proverbially "give up" and what influences them to do so at the deepest level?
As an adamant believer in the power of mindset, I naturally gravitate towards people with victorious underdog and comeback stories.
This book challenged a lot of my beliefs, and in general, helped me to better understand the inner domain of people in mostly constant states of suffering.
The conclusions brought about in this book certainly allowed me a greater sense of understanding and compassion for people in chronic pain.
Ironically, this book offered practical and incredibly profound solutions quite similar to what I'd previously suspected: the way out is through.
I highly recommend this book to health and wellness professionals who have NOT experienced chronic pain to have a better sense of understanding and gentleness towards those who do.
As for people experiencing ongoing pain in this moment? I honestly can't think of a better and more empowering book for you to read!
The hope, perseverance, and honesty offered in this book is quite potent. Enjoy!
