Moving Beyond Blocks About Money
Amazing book from New World Library.
I can relate to this one SO MUCH, to the point that my business was damn near exclusively a “passion project” and I couldn’t have been less sales oriented. I personally was saving as much money as possible while starting up my company and could easily be classified as “frugal”… or more realistically, cheap AF.
I personally did not have tons of cash flow to pour on products and services, and very much swam in a lack mindset for months… and months and months and months and months.
As a girl who grew up on the outskirts of a small town in rural Ohio, I knew my family worked their asses off to get what they got in life—and that money was not often openly worried about in front of me, but I knew we saved every chance we could.
I grew up going to garage sales, Goodwill, saving money anywhere we could because, well, we had to.
Though I kind of had a hint, I had no idea how terribly out of whack my relationship to money was until I read this book published by New World Library.
I was shocked that my relationship was so negative. KIno MacGregor of all people was the first to point this out to me.
You can’t fix a problem you refuse to acknowledge is there. Totally subconscious. But shifting this internal block changed everything for me.
Working with young men years younger than me who could walk into a room and say, kindly and with utter confidence, “This will be $1,000.” with a straight face (and damn near always a signed contract or shook hand… I realized that (to typecast) men seemed to more readily be ready to stick to their guns and know their worth—boldly—while I was massively undersharging for my services, stressing the hell out about not having enough money, and feeling guilty to send invoices. Any invoice! Even the ones I’d busted ass for and KNEW I deserved.
If I didn’t have money that I liked to spend, I reasoned, why would anyone else?
If I treated people how I wanted to be treated, I would offer everything for free or for ridiculously low prices.
This undervaluing of myself was almost my demise, until I woke up.
I wouldn’t have a business very long if I was unwilling to turn a profit, associating making money with being a bad person. (Derp.)
Ethical Business
As an artist and by far more of an intuitive "feeler" in business, I struggled initially to recognize or really own my value as an entrepreneur.
I recently read a very interesting book {Money, Manifestations, and Miracles} and it resonated with me deeply as a business owner with a B.A. in Women's Studies… a book specifically talking about money as emotional currency, a form of energy that can be used to help other people…
with Kino Macgregor of all people, money as source of
How many times did I grow up in rural, small town Ohio and think many with money were condescending or shallow?
How many times do we hear, "Money is the root of all evil."?
This book spoke specifically to women, who, as a whole, tend to have a harder time owning their value in the business world.
I won't go so far as to say I needed this book, but I will go so far as to say: I am genuinely grateful to have been sent this book, and it really, really helped me with a few inner shifts I needed to acknowledge to move forward with more authenticity.
One of the blogs I write about is about Entrepreneurship.
I write to small business owners and other solopreneurs in the world about what I'm up to with my own business (Peace to the People, LLC) and strategies I use to achieve certain outcomes.
