The Power of Opposites

Opposites do not meet as strangers, rather as two sides of the same coin.

Alan Watts

Practicing opposites has been one of my favorite styles of meditation that I've experienced. For me, it is a hugely helpful reminder that every negative emotion and sensation has an equal and opposite counterpart that co-arises.

This is reassuring that when going through pain, somewhere there is pleasure; in sadness, somewhere there lives joy, in times of difficulty, somewhere there lives ease.

I personally see myself using this style of meditation to also help heal societal wounds-- even in our society there are many who live on two sides of extreme opposition.

I would love to use these types of meditation to find the places of connection between the opposites, to find the overlap and points of similarity. How do both exist at the same time?

It may be difficult to wrap our heads around, but opposites simultaneously exist in our everyday lives all the time. To me, this meditation is so helpful in recognizing how transitory our emotions and beliefs may be. This is also the most difficult of the meditations for me to feel and embody, but one that interests me a great deal.
