Cycling: Easing into Intensity
I had no intention of becoming a Spinning® Instructor when I began my teacher training journey, but as opportunities presented themselves, I found myself saying, "Sure, why not?" a lot.
I like to learn, and have always enjoyed connecting the dots between seemingly clashing juxtapositions.
I was intrigued to approach hardcore cycling from a yogic perspective, and quickly found that, though quite contrasting, these styles of fitness and wellness are so similar.
Breathing is absolutely crucial to both these practices. Mental training and calm, consistent focus are key. Mindfulness is essential.
Good luck sprinting up several steep hills fighting your breath.
Good luck having an enjoyable experience squished on a small bike seat for up to an hour without a little lightheartedness and humor.
Without setting an intention—picking a purpose for your ride—you are little more than a human hamster on a stationary bike in a blacklight room.
But. If you can get to the essence of Spinning, it is incredible, offering just as incredible euphoric highs as yogic svasanas.
Spinning allows you to quiet your thoughts and be totally consumed in the challenge of the present moment.
It allows you to sweat your ass off and huff and puff your way to the top of so many metaphorical mountains.
You come out of class proud of yourself, impressed you were able to be so beastly.
You didn't think you had it in you, but turns out, you did.
I can't think of many other workouts as effective when it comes to burning fat, getting lost in good music, and having fun.
